The Alisa Childers Podcast · #104 From Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll to Jesus: A Hippie's Journey, with (my dad!) Chuck Girard

My dad has had truly one of the most interesting lives. As a successful studio singer in Los Angeles as a young adult, rubbing elbows with The Beach Boys, to becoming a hippie living in Hawaii, he encountered the gospel of Jesus Christ at a little country church after searching for God through Eastern Mysticism, LSD, and popular philosophies of the '60s.

Thank you for this interview with your Dad. This was such a treat to hear Chuck share his story. Alisa, I love your work on the excesses and dangers of progressive Christianity but I also love your roots in the Jesus People movement. You are also an excellent interviewer.

Your Dad is a great interview. What a life! I share some things with him. I've used psychedelic drugs in my past searching for meaning and purpose. LSD and magic mushrooms a few times each, DMT(once) and Marijuana was the limit of my drug use. Marijuana was something I used periodically at times in my past. Pretty much every concert I ever went to I experienced under the influence of marijuana. I stopped drinking alcohol a few months after I was saved. The Lord put it on my heart to quit even though I never had a problem with drinking, but I know God no longer wanted me to and I knew it was a potential stumbling block. "No drugs or alcohol so I can get the signal clear" like Andre 3000 said on the final verse of ATLiens. I use to think those were just cool lyrics when that album came out. Now I can relate to them.

I heard him say he was a Pink Floyd fan. Before I was saved I was a huge Pink Floyd fan and progressive rock fan in general (like Yes, Moody Blues, Rush, Dream Theatre and Genesis). Pink Floyd was my favorite group. Tool was a close second and they're progressive as well but more metal. Progressive music is the only progressive I like. I'm not a political progressive or religious progressive. I never evolved politically. I've been a political conservative long before I was saved.

It was a fun interview between you both. You can tell there's a great deal of love between you both. It was a great interview.

Another Gospel was an incredible read and is such an important book. So sad to see that post-modernistic influences in our culture are infiltrating and derailing some of our churches and pastors. Thanks for your thoughtful insights related to the importance of the historic gospel and for sharing your story. Looking forward to reading Rock and Roll Preacher and it was so good to hear your Dad’s testimony. I am a huge fan of Chuck Girard. “All I Want” was my spiritual anthem in the 70’s. I still tear up when I hear that powerful song. I also have great memories of occasionally worshiping at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa when I was a young man and appreciate so much that the God worked through Chuck and that church to bring your dad into relationship with Christ. God bless you both.
